10 Facts About Amharic Language

10 Facts About the Amharic Language: This Afroasiatic language is spoken by the ethnic group known as Amharas. Here are some interesting facts about it: 1. Ethiopia: Not only does it enjoy official status in Ethiopia, but it is also the lingua franca in several major cities and towns of the country. It is used as means of communication in administration by federal and several state governments. 2. Speakers: The native speakers of the tongue are approximately 24 million in numbers. Almost four million people speak it as their second language. All the Amharas use it as their only tongue, but other groups in Ethiopia also use it frequently. 3. Origin: Amharic originated when speakers of different tongues needed a way to communicate with each other. The pidginization of various vernaculars led to its birth. 4. Writing System: Unlike Arabic, this is one of the Semitic languages that is written from left to right. Ge'ez script was worked on to create a system for writing Amharic, and that is what's in use to this day. 5. Oral History: Not only does it enjoy official status in Ethiopia, but it is also the lingua franca in several major cities and towns of the country. It is used as means of communication in administration by federal and several state governments. 6. Royalty: Amharic gained importance when the royal residence was moved to the area where it was spoken by the majority. After that, a writing system was developed for it so it can be given the status it deserves. Since then, it has stopped being a regional tongue. 7. Dialects: Although the most prominent of its dialects have been studied, linguists assume that the total number may be much higher. Since the tongue is spoken in various areas by small communities, there could be no doubt that it has plenty of dialects we still have to discover. 8. Rastafari: It is a newer religion that had its origin in Jamaica in the last century. The followers of this religion have assigned sacred value to Amharic and consider it holy. 9. History: Since the 12th century, this tongue has been in use by different arms of the government, like courts and the military. No other vernacular enjoys this much status within the government. The history of the vernacular has added to its value and is one of the reasons why its speakers value it so much. 10. Pronunciation: The differences between Amharic and other Semitic languages do not end with the writing style. The pronunciation style used for it is different from other members of its group. It is considered a true syllable tongue. However, despite its uniqueness, a lot is still unknown about the tongue. The future can change that if linguists focus on this close relative of Arabic that has been influential in Ethiopia for several centuries.
