Cyber-Attacks Caused Over 18 Days of NHS Downtime

According to the new Freedom of Information (FOI) data released by the Intercity Technology, more than 17% of NHS trusts experienced security-related to the downtime over the last three years that is ...
leading to above 18 days of IT outages.
However, the IT solutions provider received the FOI responses from 80 trusts, which is around a third of the total in England.
Of those 25 (31%) have claimed to experienced IT outages between January 2015 and February 2018, with 14 of them is a result of a security breach. And in total, almost 80 responding trusts have been suffered by the 18 security incidents which are leading to over 18 days of the downtime.
The overall figure for the IT downtime exceeded to the 1300 hours, which averages out to more than the 16 hours per trust. The number for downtime and breaches would no doubt have been even greater and also had more Trusts responded.
According to the Intercity Technology, while the WannaCry ransomware outages of May 2017 will have reported for a very large number of these security breaches, and some of the responding organizations also fell victim to the Zepto and Locky variants, with the most rigorous attack knocking the systems offline for almost two weeks,
It is expected that the WannaCry led to the cancellation of almost 19,000 operations and appointments, troublemaking as a minimum of 34% of trusts in England.
However, the Ian Jackson is responsible for the leading public, and private sector partnerships at the Intercity Technology argued that the latest cybersecurity funding boost will be announced by the government soon and will also have a limited impact.
Ina Jackson told on a blog post that the extra £150m which has recently been set away to advance the cyber defenses which will merely ensure that NHS IT systems are brought up to date, and also act as a sticking plaster on under-investment and also the continued use of the legacy operating systems. What is needed is smarter and also continued with the investment in IT systems and security defenses to ensure the long-term protection.
As saw with WannaCry, a very successful cyber-attack on a healthcare organization can have an enormous impact on its day-to-day operations. By following these attacks, it is encouraging to see trusts across the country by making paces towards improving their protection, and the cybersecurity industry is surely working in collaboration with these trusts to avoid future incidents.
