What Makes Fast Food Bad and How To Make It Better

WHAT MAKES FAST FOOD BAD AND HOW TO MAKE IT BETTER FAST FOOD CAN BE BAD FOR YOUR BODY FROM HEAD TO TOE. CARDIOVASCULAR AND DIGESTIVE SYSTEMS Most fast foods are packed with too many calories from carbohydrates and “bad" fats as well as high levels of sodium. These cause blood sugar spikes and raise your blood pressure leading to increased risk for diabetes, heart disease and stroke-three of the top ten killers of Americans. Opt for choices that are lower in fats, carbohydrates and sodium by cooking at home. When you do eat out, don't add salt to your food and avoid hidden sugars by reading nutrition facts for the foods you choose. Fill up on complex carbohydrates like vegetables and fruits and lean proteins like chicken. CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM As many as 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches, and most of the known dietary triggers for headaches- MSG, nitrates, processed meats and salt -are found in fast food. Fast food eaters are also 51 percent more likely to develop depression. Choose foods with fresh ingredients you recognize; mystery ingredients are a sign of too much processing. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Obesity leads to respiratory issues including difficulty breathing, asthma, and sleep apnea. Research shows that kids who eat fast food three times per week or more have a much higher risk of asthma and rhinitis. Don't be fooled by “healthy" marketing; know what is in foods and how many calories you're consuming. Never feed children fast food more than twice each week. SKIN AND BONES Fast foods are high in sugars, sodium and carbohydrates that can cause or contribute to acne, tooth decay, osteoporosis, and eczema. Instead, make sure you get sufficient amounts of calcium and magnesium from leafy greens, sardines and dairy products. Choose skin-nourishing foods like pomegranates, dark chocolate and walnuts.
