10 Things That Have Shaped Our Last 10 Years September 11 On September 11, 2001 al-Qaeda terrorists took control of four commercial planes in the United States. Two were crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, one into the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and one into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It is estimated as much as 205 million gallons of oil were leaked into the gulf, causing major damage to marine and wildlife as well as the fishing industry and tourism. This disaster is now the largest oil spill in United States history. Global Recession In 2008 a major financial crisis happened in the United States leading to the worst recession since the Second World War. Banks were failing, people were being laid off by the thousands, and the real estate market was collapsing. This led to the government issuing large stimulus packages and bailouts to failing companies. Social Networking facebook. twitter Social networks have grown significantly over the past decade. By giving people a way to interact and stay in touch via the internet, social networks have become very popular. You Tube myspace a place for friends Broadcast Yourself Hurricane Katrina Hitting land in late August of 2005, Katrina was the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes in American history. At least 1,800 people lost their lives due to this storm and many more lost their homes. Property damage caused by this storm was an estimated $81 billion. Lime Illegal Music File Sharing wire During the early part of the past decade, illegal music file sharing was a hot topic. People were sharing music via the internet by the millions and the music industry was starting to feel the strain from it.
