WHERE ARE ALL THE MALE TEACHERS? श THE LACK OF MALE TEACHERS PARTICULARLY AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, HAS BECOME AN EPIDEMIC THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. USA CANADA:17% 25% CANADA:70% 25% UK Men account for less than 25 per cent of all teachers in United States public schools. Only 17 per cent of elementary teachers in Canada are male. Only 123,361 of 502,562 registered teachers are men - just 25 per cent. PUPILS TRY HARDER FOR MALE TEACHERS TEACHING REMAINS A FEMALE-DOMINATED * PROFESSION According to an official study, pupils make more effort to please male teachers, display greater self-esteem and are more likely to believe they are being treated fairly. Many parents believe male teachers serve as good role models for boys, particularly those without fathers in the home. This is especially true for younger children. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 2% of pre-K and kindergarten teachers and 18% of elementary and middle-school teachers are men. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? WHAT CAN WE DO? LOW STATUS RESPECT TEACHERS Men turn their backs to teaching because the profession has lost prestige. If we want more men in teach- ing, we must regard them as professionals & invite into the reform conversations LOW %24 SALARY INCREASE SALARIES Low starting salaries are also holding men back from entering the profession. It we want more men in teaching, we must strive to pay all our teachers professional salaries FEAR OF ACCUSATION CHANGE RULES Some men fear accepting a job in an elementary school is an invitation to accusations of abuse.
