Designing Information for the SIX SENSES

Designing Information for the SIX SENSES What if we designed for all of our senses? Suppose for a moment that sound, touch, and odour were treated as the equals of sight, and emotion considered as important as cognition. What would our built environment be like if sensory response, sentiment, and memory were critical design factors, the equals of structure and program? What if we tried integrating all of the senses into information design? This seems difficult because the main approach to "Malnar & Vodvarka" information design has always been visual. Experimental Multi Sensory integration within Information Design Vision Vision has been the main sense for design in general for decades. Because 80% of the 70 cognitive data of the brain comes through sight, we cannot ignore vision entirely. In this experimental installation of a simple line graph designed for the six senses, the visual part would be applied through printing the figures and lines of the graph on the back wall of the installation. Moreover, the 100 60 55 90 80 55 Auditory 70 40 40 Two speakers are mounted on both sides of the Line Graph. Those speakers work as a sound system controlled by the moveable haptic hand. For example as the viewer goes up and down the stairs while 60 30 35 proper use of graphics should be appropriate to the message or behaviour being conveyed, using correct colors and aesthetics to ensure the sense of 50 10 20 10 sight grabs peoples attention to the areas that are needed. hol ding the moveable hand, the hand reaches a peak point of the data displayed, a pleasant music could be played. On the contrary, if the data shows a decline in sales, a bad sounding music would be played. The volumes of the sounds could also represent a decline in sal es or any other fluctuation in data. Gustatory It would be difficult to create an information design experience with taste. Nevertheless, one solution would be providing 20 some kind of sweet treats when things are going well and the data shows a rise in profits or advances in a particular process. Something salty would be given for Нaptic kinesthesia This moving hand is attached to the wall next to the stairs where Kinesthesia is not a sense that we whether you can fit, what type of movements you need, how to people don't ev en know about its adjust your body position, etc., is because you have kinesthetic sense, or an ability to sense body position and the movement of muscles, tendons, and joints. When your body experiences an unev en steps height, you try to balance yourself immediately. This experience would be a good kinesthetic method to make the Olfactory decline or drop along the think about very much. Many any line graph. However, how those treats could be provided to the the visual figures are printed. This would provide a haptic experience as well as working as a controller for other Olfactory and Auditory senses. The hand movement up and down could trigger an aroma according to what the data is. A pleasant smell goes with significant growth in company production or sale and a bad smell would existence! We could des cribe volumes changes up and down simultaneously with the hand movement as it goes up and down following the line graph. You decide to cut viewer recognize data fluctuations immediately whether they are visually impaired or not. Also, the viewer would sense the data fluctuation through going up and down the stairs with a through a bunch of parked cars and notice that some of them are close together, so when you get to them, you have to turn and adjust your body in order to get through the tight spaces. The reason you are able to sense go decline. Another method is attaching a scratch and sniff stickers to every significant variable, with either a pleasant or unpleasant smell according to what the data conveys. and cools down the hand according to its position and type of data communicated. simultaneously with the line graph figures. Note: This is a preliminary exploration into the possibilities of designing Information with the 6senses taken into consideration, while the information design model here is asimple Line Graph, the solutions and methods explored and described here could be implemented with more research within other more complicated and data intense information design projects. www.HeshamGalal.com ,2014 © All rights reserved. 30
