Youth Smoking Declines in Mississippi

CLEARING the significantly fewer AIR: Mississippi teens are lighting up Monitoring teen smoking is important, because 80% of people who die from a tobacco-related disease began smoking BEFORE THE AGE OF 18. Cigarette smoking among Mississippi youth has DECREASED SUBSTANTIALLY since statewide tobacco control programs were implemented in 1999. WHO SMOKING? Young Caucasians are more likely than young African Americans to have ever tried a cigarette, to be current smokers, or to be frequent smokers. Males are more likely than females to be current smokers. 9" 12th graders are more likely than 9th graders to have tried smoking. 12th :MIDDLE SCHOOL: RESULTS Current smoking among public middle school students has decreased by 72% since 1998, leading to 16,587 fewer young smokers. -100 Frequent smoking has decreased by 75% since 1998, leading to 4,371 fewer middle school students who are frequent smokers. HIGH SCHOOL: RESULTS Current smoking among public high school students has decreased by 37% since 1998, leading to 15,418 fewer young smokers. Frequent smoking has decreased by 55% since 1998, leading to 10,642 fewer high school students who are frequent smokers. BIGGEST: DECREASES There are 48% fewer young black smokers now than there were in 1995. 48% There are 47% fewer young white 41% smokers now than there were in 1995. There are 66% fewer 9th-grade smokers now than there were in 1995. 66% Overall, there are 49% fewer young smokers now than there were in 1995. - 49% WHY DECLINE? THE:: Mississippi's tobacco counter-marketing initiatives have been maintained at three age-appropriate segments that include youth ages 6-18, plus Mississippi's adult-focused effort promoting the state's free Tobacco Quitline counseling services.
