The Worst Winter Ever?
THE WORST WINTER EVER? After news reports about the polar vortex, stores running out of salt and snowstorm-caused traffic jams, this feels like the worst winter ever. But is it, really? Here's a look at some historical New York City snowfall data. The winters that were as bad as or worse than the 2013-14 winter are highlighted in blue: INCHES OF SNOWFALL IN CENTRAL PARK, FROM 1869 - 2014 60" 76" 70 inches of snow 62" 58") 60") 63") 57" 60 50 40 30 10 1872 -73 1874 -75 *Data for 2013-14 reflects snowfall up to early February 2014. This number will likely be higher by the time winter ends. 2010 - 11 By Lisa Mahapatra for International Business Times; Source: National Weather Service, Eastern Region Headquarters YOU CAN'T PARK YOUR SNOW HERE, BUDDY It's illegal not to shovel your sidewalk after snow accumulates. Sanitation officers have issued more than 11,000 tickets to New Yorkers living within the five boroughs since the begining of this winter. Here's how the numbers compare by borough, and compare to the past two winters: 57" SNOWFALL, BY YEAR: (673 (4,339 SUMMONS ISSUED, BY BOROUGH AND BY YEAR: 50" 3,480 40" 4,000 (2,804 30" 3,000 20" 2,000 10" 301 1,000 MANHATTAN 2011-12 BROOKLYN 2012-13 QUEENS BRONX It doesn't matter how much snow there is: Manhattan is doing OK. It's the outer boroughs, especially Brooklyn, that are most affected by heavy snowfall. This is likely because Manhattan has more apartment buildings than the other boroughs, and most apartment buildings have maintenance crews to clear the snow. Manhattan is also the richest of the five boroughs, and likely has the best amenities.
