DIABETES: D0 YOU KNOW THE FACTS? It's WOrld Diabetes Day on November 14th. How much do you know about this chronic disease? 347 million people in the world have diabetes. 347millio 90% of them have type 2 diabetes which is usually preventable 3% Diabetes is currently responsible for %0 of all deaths in the world The World Health Organisation predicts deaths from Diabetes will increase by two thirds by 2030 Diabetes contributes to many health complications, some of which can be very severe. Common complications include: • Damage to vision (Retinopathy) After 15 years with diabetes, 2% of sufferers will be blind and around 10% will suffer severe visual impairment Kidney damage 10 to 20% of diabetics die of kidney failure Reduced blood flow and neuropathy Can lead to foot ulcers and eventual amputations • Heart disease and stroke 50% of diabetes sufferers eventually die of cardiovascular disease • Neuropathy (nerve damage) 50% of people with diabetes will suffer from tingling, pain, numbness or weakness in their hands and feet A person with diabetes is at least TWICE as likely to die at any given time than their peers without diabetes 280 AustralianS develop diabetes every day Diabetes is Australia's fastest growing chronic disease It's the sixth leading cause of death in Australia today 1.7 million 3.3 million 2012 2031 1.7 million Australians It's estimated up to have type 2 diabetes, but up to half of these are undiagnosed By 2031.it's estimated 3.3 million sestimated. Australians will have type 2 diabetes Up to 60% of cases of type 2 diabetes could be prevented. HOW? 1. Maintain a healthy bodyweight2. Exercise regularly Carrying excess fat around your middle is a danger sign for diabetes Try to be active for at least 30 minutes every day 3. Eat a healthy diet Aim to eat at least three portions of fruit and vegetables every day Avoid processed and takeaway food which can often be high in fat and salt Eat high fibre foods like nuts, seeds, wholemeal bread and pasta, brown rice, baked potatoes 4 Avoid tobacco 5 Cut down on alcohol mpmp Sensible drinking limits are: Men: up to four standard drinks per day Women: up to two standard drinks per day Smokers are twice as likely to become diabetic as non-smokers.
