AWAY WHO'S DRIVING LESS AND USING MORE ALTERNATIVE MODES OF TRANSPORTATION? DRIVEN Historically, federal and local governments have continually invested in new highway infrastructures, based on the assumption that driving would increase steadily. But as gas prices soar and environmental awareness grows, Americans are taking measures to drive less. What age group is leading this trend, and what could it mean for future transportation policies? IT'S TRUE: PEOPLE ARE HITTING THE ROAD SLIGHTLY LESS AND GENERATION Y DRIVES LEAST OFTEN The number of miles traveled per person by car in the United States peaked in 2007, when the average person drove 10,045 miles during the year. Since then, it's returned back to previous levels. LEADING THE TREND AMONG GENERATIONS In many areas, driving is unavoidable, and almost everyone gets behind the wheel. However, across the country, young people of driving age not only drive less than the average American adult, they drive less than all other generations.
