When Reagan, the GOP, and Democrats Doubled the Gas Tax

STREETSBLOG How Congress Voted to Double the Gas Tax and Fund Transit in 1982 The Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 (H.R. 6211) was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on January 6, 1983. It raised the gas tax from 4¢ per gallon to 9¢ per gallon, and for the first time directed 1¢ per gallon to transit funding.
