What Does The Prime Minister Earn?

WHAT DOES THE PM EARN PER YEAR? Being the British Prime Minister can't be an easy job. Whether it's appearing on live TV talking to an unpredictable electorate or dealing with an increasingly complicated foreign policy, PM probably isn't a job most of us would jump at. But how much does such a difficult and undoubtedly stressful job pay? In this infographic we take an in-depth look at how much David Cameron earns each year including all the added perks that come with being the most powerful man in Great Britain. Let's have a look at how much the PM takes home, and how this compares... THE PRIME MINISTER'S ANNUAL SALARY Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney earns nearly double in one week (£160K) what the Prime Minister earns in one year. £142.5K £81.3K BEFORE TAX AFTER TAX The PM's gross annual wage is a combined ministerial and parliamentary salary. The 'after tax' figure is after income tax, National Insurance and pension contributions are deducted. £160,000 is what Wayne Rooney earns each week after tax. His pre-tax income is £300K per week - and that doesn't include sponsorships, advertising and other additional income. You might think that £140K per year isn't a huge salary for the Prime Minister, especially when it's compared to Premier League footballers. However, when you compare it to other high paying jobs in the UK (or to your own annual salary), it starts to look a little more generous: Aircraft Pilot £90,420 Chief Executive £81,521 Air Traffic Controller £79,874 Marketing Director IT Director £70,742 £64,511 Financial Manager £61,108 Senior Police Officer £57,896 UK Prime Minister £142,500 Wage figures above are based on the median gross full-time annual earnings, as noted in the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, Office for National Statistics. Also covered in How Well Does My Job Pay? which Is featured on the Statistics.gov.uk website. Figures correct as of 2014, as this year's data is not yet avallable. Gross Income refers to annual income before Income tax, penslon or National Insurance is deducted. THE PERKS OF BEING BRITAIN'S LEADER It's not just the money. There's a host of perks that come with being PM.. HH On top of his annual salary, the Prime Minister also gets the use of three very expensive homes. The most famous is 10 Downing Street, which has over 100 rooms and a flat on the third floor. He can also stay at Chequers, a country house in Buckinhamshire, and a £1 million constituency home in the Cotswolds. Most of the 100 rooms in 10 Downing Street are offices and meeting rooms, used for the running of the government and meeting foreign dignitaries. Athough there is a fully contained flat on the third floor, the current Prime Minister actually lives at 11 Downing Street, which has a bigger flat. This is normally home to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, but Cameron (like Blair and Brown before him) prefers the blgger flat. As well as the homes and salary, the Prime Minister can also claim a wide range of expenses and allowances, and benefit from a generous final salary pension scheme. Expense claims can include: TRAVEL STAFF EQUIPMENT HOTELS COMMS Travel generally refers to travel between Westminster and a constituency home. Staff and equipment usually refer to those needed to run an office, and hotels are for overnight stays away from home whilst on parliamentary duties (so holidays and breaks can't be claimed on expenses). Comms refers to communication with constituents, by whatever means that may be, rather than communicating with friends / family. SHOULD BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER BE PAID MORE? You might think the Prime Minister gets paid more than enough, but actually he isn't even the highest paid politician in Britain. The PM's salary is a fraction of what many earn in the City, while there are also civil servants and managers in the NHS who earn more. Let's compare Cameron's salary to that of other leaders: £276.5K £173.8K £156.7K £142.5K £144.6K S. Harper (Canada) D. Cameron N. Sturgeon (Scotland) B. Obama A. Merkel (England) (USA) (Germany) Even Obama isn't the highest paid world leader. Singapore MP Hsien Loong tops the list, raking in nearly 10 times Cameron's salary at £1,316,516. At the other end of the scale, Naerndra Modi, the PM of India, has a salary of Just £20,265. So whille it could be worse for David Cameron, It must be a little annoying that Scotland's First Minister earns more than he does, not that he'll be strugglilng for bus fare anytime soon.
