Trends on $5 Million in Sandy Relief Giving

TRENDS ON $5 MILLION IN SANDY RELIEF GIVING Network for Good is the leading digital giving platform. In our eleven-year history, we've processed nearly $750 million for over 80,000 nonprofits. During natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy, Network for Good curates a list of relief organizations responding to the crisis and works with partners Yahoo!, CrowdRise, Capital One, YourCause and others to promote donation links so donors can make informed giving decisions. DONATE NOW SUMMARY The average donation for Sandy relief was slightly higher than for recent disasters; $79 versus $68 for the Japan tsunami and Haiti earthquake responses. + The Text2Give appeal spread mostly via social media and on Network for Good's own portal text donations accounted for nearly 10% of giving through these giving options. + More companies launched disaster campaigns on the Network for Good platform than for previous disasters, especially for employee giving with matching funds. + Nonprofits and companies for the first time orchestrated more relief appeals across several channels (websites, email, mobile, social, TV, radio, even ATMS!) to rally relief donations. ONLINE GIVING GIVING CONCENTRATION DECEMBER & DISASTERS DOMINATE FIRST U , SEVEN DAYS DEC 5 December is the strongest giving month for most nonprofits, but natural disasters create fundraising 'events' in the media, attracting impulse gifts and creating online donation spikes as high as 10 times normal giving levels, but still less than December levels. Disaster giving is concentrated in the first 7 days of a disaster response - when the media attention is high - and typically peaks at Day 3-5. SANDY GIVING TIMELINE DAYS 1-7 The giving in response to Superstorm Sandy followed the typical trend, with the majority of donations concentrated between days 1-7, but with additional peaks in line with media coverage of new developments in the disaster response efforts, such as the cancellation of the New York Marathon.
