TRAUMATIC BIRTH INJURIES When Medical Neglect Turns to Malpractice BIRTH TRAUMA damage sustained to the tissue and organs of a newly delivered child, often due to physical pressure or trauma during childbirth. DID YOU KNOW? there are an estimated 6-8 injuries 16 per 1000 live births 10 6-8 injuries more than 20% of all infant deaths are caused by Dirth defects To understand the problem broadly, there are two primary causes of birth trauma: mechanical injuries and anoxic injuries. Mechanical Injuries Mechanical injuries may or may not be obvious early in infancy. Often times, such injuries are only revealed later through marked, developmental abnormalities of a child. MECHANICAL INJURIES INDUCED BY BIRTH TRAUMA MAY INCLUDE Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) an injury sustained to the Complex set of nerves that control the muscles of the shoulders, arms, hands and fingers most brachial plexus injuries occur during birth as a result of "shoulder dystocia." This occurs when the baby's shoulder becomes "stuck" against the mother's pubic bone excessive force applied to the baby's head, neck and shoulders can result in stretching and/or tearing of the BP nerves an estimated 2 -5 children per 1,000 births suffer brachial plexus injuries 2-5injuries Anoxic Injuries These injuries are often very difficult to diagnose during infancy, which makes it harder to take appropriate measures against medical errors and negligence. Anoxic injuries occur when there is a complete lack of oxygen to the brain.
