Transportation Safety: By The Numbers

Transportation Safety By The Numbers How many people are killed for every one billion passenger miles traveled MOTORCYCLES 1 Top Causes of Motorcycle Accidents 217 DEATHS PER BILLION MILES Motorcycles are by far the most dangerous form of transportation. Motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to be in a fatal accident than drivers in passenger cars. Because of their open design, high speeds, and low visibility to other drivers, motorcycles are a traveler's most dangerous option. Bad Weather Lane Splitting CARS AND TRUCKS 5.75 DEATHS PER BILLION MILES More than 113,000 people were killed riding in cars or trucks in the five years ending in 2013. Even though the number of fatalities is much higher than any other form of transportation, there are far more cars and trucks on the road than any other type of vehicle - making them the most popular form of transportation and resulting in the most deaths. Speeding Poor Road Signs Drinking Other Motorists COMMUTER RAILS & AMTRAK .47 DEATHS PER BILLION MILES Amtrak and commuter railroads are a relatively safe form of transportation, with only a handful of deaths each year. Even though there has been 2 major commuter rail accidents this past year, traveling by Amtrak or commuter railroads remain a relatively safe form of travel. 4 SUBWAYS & METRO RAIL .24 DEATHS PER BILLION MILES The last major incident involving a commuter rail occurred in Washington D.C. back in 2009. Subways and light rails carry passengers for even more miles than Amtrak and commuter rail lines combined. BUSES .14 DEATHS 6. AIRLINES .06 DEATHS PER BILLION MILES PER BILLION MILES School buses and city buses are often painted bright colors to warn other drivers and drive very slowly on local streets. Because of their large size and slow speeds, Buses provide a very safe way to travel locally. Even with all the high profile airline disasters these past few years, air travel remains the safest form of transportation. And nothing is safer than flying on a U.S. commercial airline. Most aviation deaths occur in small planes traveling to rural areas and private planes.
