Top Horse Breeds and Disciplines Defined

CATANESE SWELLS A LAW CORPORATION TOP HORSE BREEDS AND DISCIPLINES DEFINED 1. Hunter/Jumper Hunt seat is a style of forward-seat riding, based on the tradition of foxhunting. It includes show hunters, equitation, and show jumpers. Show Hunters - Judged the horse's movement, form, and manners. Horses should be smooth, quiet-moving, well-built horses with good temperament. Any breed is welcome unless they are breed-specific classes but Warmbloods and Thoroughbreds are most popular. Equitation Classes -J the rider only, including their ability to navigate courses correctly and their position both on the flat and over fences Show Jumpers - Show jumping is judged much differently than hunters and equitation and is judged on speed and ability to clear the fences without knocking rails. Jumpers horses typically have more power and energy than hunters and manners and movement are not judged. Again, Warmbloods and Thoroughbreds generally dominate the discipline, though any breed may compete. 2. Thoroughbreds The thoroughbred breed is most known for its use in horseracing. Thoroughbreds are considered "hot-blooded" and are known for their agility, speed, and spirit. Fewer than 50% of all race horses ever win a race, and less than 1% ever win a stakes race. Horses that are unsuitable for racing or finish with a successful career but are not suitable to be bred often become riding horses in a variety of disciplines including hunter/jumper, dressage, and eventing with the help of agencies and organizations. These racehorses are commonly referred to as "off-the-track thoroughbreds" or "OTTBS". 3. Arabian Show Horses Arabian horses, also known as Arabs, are known for their distinctive "dished" head shape and their high tail carriage. AHA shows are for purebred Arabian, Half-Arabian, and Anglo-Arabian horses only. These English shows typically feature the hunt seat and Olympic-style disciplines of dressage, show hunter, show jumping, and competitive driving. Arabian horses are also popular in endurance riding due to their ability cover up to 100 miles per day. 4. Pleasure Horse There are two categories of pleasure horse which are English Pleasure and Western pleasure. The goal is for the horse to appear pleasurable to ride in both disciplines. In Western Pleasure competitions, manners and suitability of the horse is evaluated. Judges look for a relaxed but collected gait cadence and relatively slow speed. They also look for a calm and responsive disposition. Quarter horses are most commonly used in these divisions. In English Pleasure competitions, horses are ridden in either hunt seat or saddle seat tack. Horses are judged on their manners, performance, quality and conformation. The horse should move straight, with a steady rhythm and a free and flowing stride with a relaxed headset and mild speed.
