Technology & The Future of Education

How technology will change classrooms Did you know? 8.6 million children aged laptop, PC or have access to a 5-16 in the UK tablet. The Statistics 70% of 7-16 year olds have access to the Internet in their room 60% of 5-16s have their own television in their room. 75% of 5-16s own their own computer 70% of 5-16 year olds own a mobile phone & three in five owners now go online on their mobile. What does this mean for the future of learning? The opening up of information, so that it is no longer disseminated solely through classroom teaching Technology altering the traditional teacher/student model. Educational apps Video lessons Inter-school teaching platforms. Educational games Digitised classrooms More collaborative, peer to peer learning Technologies that will change schooling Augmented realities Technologies such as Google Glass will allow users to map additional information on to what they are seeing through a lens. Apps such as Sky Maps allow users to map the sky for constellations, and learn about the stars. 3D Printing This is a fairly well known one now. 3D printing technology will revolutionise education, specifically in subjects such as art and the sciences. 3D printers can produce mini models to test out engineering design principles. Cloud Computing In the future, students may only need an electronic device to access all their homework, with all learning resources stored in a Cloud. More digital information mean that students will have access to more virtual libraries than physical ones. Social Networking Often viewed as a distraction from study, social media could in fact become a useful educational resource. Social media will allow peer-to-peer, interactive learning and student feedback to play a much more crucial role in future schooling. Multi-Touching & Flexible Screens Note taking on flexible OLED screens will be more commonplace as learning becomes more digitised. These new displays will be lightweight and thin, making them perfect for individual learning. Biometric tracking Biometrics is traditionally associated with the security industry, but it could have an important role to play in education. Biometrics & eye tracking could be essential in allowing teachers to understand how their pupils are absorbing & processing information. Game & app based learning The Internet has dramatically shortened children's attention spans. Content is increasingly consumed through platforms such as Youtube & Facebook. Video game based learning could become an important tool, as children move away from learning by rote. What will future learning look like? More interactive More empathetic. More responsive More democratic
