Tailgating: A Quick Guide

YOUR QUICK GUIDE TO TAILGATING ORIGIN OF TAILGATING Various universities lay claim to starting the tailgating trend. What isn't disputed, however, is the role of college football in the growth and development of this classic fall ritual. 1869 1881 1904 Rutgers vs. Princeton Tailgating dates back to the very first football game ever played between Rutgers and Princeton in 1869 when fans traveled to the game by horse-drawn carriage, grilling sausages at the "tail-end" of the horse. University of Kentucky It was the first college football game south of the Mason-Dion Line, that did the most to usher in the pageantry of tailgating. Student and alumni enjoyed a pre-game supper of wild fish, and then later lingered over the food that was after the game. Yale University A train made up of private railcars brought fans to one of Yale's first football games - but could only take them as far as the stadium. Hungry and thirsty by the time they arrived, the fans made a point to pack a picnic hamper for the next game. of tailgaters 95% cook at the stadium travel less than an hour The average American annually consumes TH 23.1 of beer The first six-pack was produced by the Pabst Brewery in gallons 1940s. the 90 30% of tailgaters never see the inside of the stadium. 30 The first cousin of the hops plant is the marijuana plant. 1935 The first beer cans were produced TAILGATING GAMES Cornhole Beer Pong/Beruit Cornhole is similar to the bean bag toss. Players trade off tossing cornhole bags at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. Players throw a ping-pong ball across a table with the intent of landing the ball in a cup of beer on the other end, which the opposing team must then drink. Dizzy Bat Beer Ball A player first chugs a beer out of the end of a wiffle ball bat, followed by spinning around 10 times with his forehead placed at the end of the bat. After that, he must hit a beer can that's pitched to him. Each team places their beers along a table's edge. A player then throws ping-pong balls at the opposition's beers. If the ball hits the can, the thrower chugs his beer until the the other team puts the ball back on the table. This continues until one team finishes all of its beers. Frisbee Flip Cup The Classics Sometimes kids just want to keep it simple. When you're packing your car, don't forget to bring the tailgate classics - a football and a Frisbee. Teams line up on either side of a table, and each person has a cup of beer in front of him. The first person of each team chugs his beer then puts the cup back on the table with it hanging off the edge. Then he must flip the cup on its top (half of a rotation). The next person can then repeat the process. The team that finishes first wins.
