meerkats REPUBLIC OF WA ........... WA CENSUS SNAPSHOT The Census was carried out in August 2011 and outlines who we are, and where we are going as a state and as a nation. The following is a snapshot of the most pertinent initial results from the Census. We hope this data will help unlock some opportunities for your business, and would welcome the opportunity to talk to you about anything that springs to mind. POPULATION GROWTH 2.24 million 14.3 6.92 million WA IS OUTGROWING THE REST OF AUSTRALIA, BUT OVERALL, WE ARE NOT GROWING AS FAST AS THEY THOUGHT. 5.6. 5.35 million 8,5 The census count suggests that Australia's population growth since 2006 was much smaller than previously estimated, especially in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. 4.33 million 11% 1.6 million 5.4 The estimate of the population for mid-2011 has been slashed from 22.5 million people to 22.3 million. The out of 294,400 is equivalent to wiping away roughly Bunbury, Mandurah & Rookingham's combined population. 495,351 357,218 10.2 211,943 T 9.9 MIGRATION COUNTRY OF BIRTH THE CHANGING FACE OF 8,6% BRITS: 102.0 3.2% WA'S IMMIGRATION. 1.3% 1.2% 78,738 58% of our population growth came from overseas migration. And almost 31% of WAS residents are born overseas. 8,915 LAND: 27,18 PHILIPPINOS: 17,280 6 Statistics sliow hugo influxes of people from the Philippines with numbers trebling to 17,288 since 2006. FERTILITY RATES: IT'S NOT JUST MINERALS MAKING US BOOM TOWN, WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BABY BOOM. Fertility rates in WA are up trom a decade ago as West Australians valiantily try to hold back the ageing population. in 2000, the fertility rate was 1.81 children per woman. West Australians now average 1.96 children per woman. This boom seems to be slowing however, as the fertility rate is down trom its peak in 2008 of 2.10 children per woman. CHILDREN NOw OUTNUMBER RETIREES 19.7% of West Aussies are younger than 15, but only 12.3% are older than 65. FIFO PHANTOM POPULATIONS: In fact, WA is home to 9 of the fastest growing towns in Australia - but apart from Perth and Capel, all of them are mining towns. WA'S MINING HEARTLAND SHOWS THE LARGEST INCREASES IN POPULATION. PERT CAPEL Nationally the biggest population growth for a council area was in WA's Eastern Pilbara region where numbers rose from 6500 in 2006 to a massive 17,000 in 2011. That's an increase of 83%. This figure however is a "population bubble" caused by the large amount of FIFO workers residing in the area on the night of the Census. The State Government has poured more than $1billion into the Pilbara Cities project trying to make Karratha and Port Hedland more appealing to long term residents. HOUSEHOLD COMPOSITION: WHO'S SLEEPING WITH WHOM? SINGLE PARENTS There are a lot of childless people living in WA - in fact over half of all WA households dan't have kids living at home. 11. Of these households, just over hall are couples, and the other half lives on their own. 24 SINGLE HOUSEHOLDS Only around 1 in 3 houselholds across WA are families with kids at home, and around 1 in 10 are single parents. DINKS 28 SHARED HOUSES 4. COUPLES WITH KIDS 33 NATIONAL 13.6 WA 7.9 AND IN WHAT SORT OF HOUSES? The urban sprawl continues for WA. Nationally, around 13.6% of dwellings are apartments. But in WA, we much prefer the freestanding home, where only 7.9% of our dwellings are apartments or units. There are 794,159 occupied houses in WA, and 1 ply ones. And 81% of these occupied houses have three or more bedrooms. НOME OWNERSHIP THE AUSSIE DREAM OF HOME OWNERSHIP IS ELUDING MORE OF US. In WA, the number of renters has also jumped with an increase in rental rates from 272 to 29.2. This is still fractionally lower than the rest of the country, which OWNED RENTED MORTGAGED 29.5% 29.2% 37.8% has a rental rale of 29.6, Weekly rental prices have surged since 2006, up from $170 to $300 a week, while average monthly mortgage repayments are up 60% from $1213 to $1950. Again, this is more than the national average proving that we pay a prentium to live in WA. DOWN FROM 34 UP FROM 27.2 UP FROM 37.6 MEDIAN MONTHLY MORTGAGES NCRLASE SNCE TAS ACT OLD $1,950 $2,058 $1,300 $1,500> $2,167 $1,800 $1,850 $1,993 $1,700 And it's not new news that the banks are less willing to lend. Lending rates have dropped from 5.81% in 2006 to 4.69% last year. INCOME: WA blokes are the highest earners in the nation. On WE ARE EARNING MORE THAN THE OTHER STATES average, men in WA earn $1,670.60, and females only $1,239.40. A snapshot of income from 2011, reveals ne median weekly income for a WA household is now $1415. $1,239.40 $1,670.60 This is a 32% rise in median weekly income for a household in WA. This large jump in household wealth has largely been fuelled by the mining boom. In NSW, the jump was only 19% (to $1237) and in VIC 18% jump (to $1216) NSW $1,237 $1,216 WA MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD $1,415 PER WEEK COST OF LIVING: AND IT'S GETTING PRICIER FASTER. HERE'S THE BAD NEWS. IT IS MORE EXPENSIVE TO LIVE IN WA. In Perth, over the twelve months to the March quarter 2012: the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 1.9%, greater than the weighted average for the eight capital cities (1.6%). SPENDING $227.74 On average, West Australian households are spending WA HOUSEHOLD $1285 a week on goods and services - around $50 more than the national average. This is an increase of 38% The largest price increase was for Education, which increased by 6.8%. Education recorded rises in all capital cities, due to increases in tuition lees and the addition of an IT levy and other non-tuition fees. $205.27 S192.50 $181.25 S119.37 S70.87 S87.37 since 2004. But spare a thought for our cousins in the NT, where the average weekly spend is $1499, and if you want to save money, then consider moving to SA where your average spend will be a measly S1044. HOUSING COSTS Food and non-alcoholic beverages was the only group to show a decrease, down by 1.2%. The main contributor to this was the cost of fruit getting cheaper.
