Recipe for a Frack

RECIPE FOR A CLEAN, GREEN NATURAL WHAT IS FRACKING? One of the largest reserves FRACK Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) is a means of natural gas extraction employed in 90% of natural gas well drilling in the U.S. of natural gas sits beneath Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York and Ohio; natural gas companies have already leased or purchased 30 MILLION ACRES. GAS WARNING - SIDE EFFECTS INCLUDE: INGREDIENTS (per frack) AIR POLLUTION WATER POLLUTION UP TO In 2005, fracking became exempt from regulation under the Clean Water Act at the urging of U.S. Vice President and former Halliburton executive Dick Cheney 2.3 million tons of 7 MILLION GALLONS OF FROM LOCAL smog per year > Dangerous groundlevel ozone, methane, benzene, and sulfur dioxide WATER WATERWAYS The EPA has discovered fracking compounds in a Wyoming aquifer Increased likelihood of asthma UP TO CLIMATE CHANGE HEALTH PROBLEMS 50,000 GALLONS OF CHEMICALS • mysterious illnesses • skin rashes • difficulty breathing • dizziness • hair loss • dead livestock and stillborn animals • neurological impairments • nerve pain • chemical burns • loss of smell • exposure to carcinogens • exposure to radiation Gas drilling is the largest single source of methane emissions, which is the second largest contributor to global warming INCLUDING CARCINOGENS AND BIOCIDES Extreme measures used in fracking make it dirtier than coal UP TO 320,000 TOXIC WASTE DAMAGED INFRASTRUCTURE Large amounts of toxic, radioactive, and caustic liquid *- waste by-products pose storage, treatment, and disposal problems • excessive truck traffic resulting in deteriorated bridges · 24/7 industrial noise and roads • predatory land leases • congestion • increased crime POUNDS OF SAND OR OTHER PROPPANT • loss of community identity *Well may be fracked up to 18 times • decreased property value It takes nearly 1,000 truck loads to set up a frack site. End to end that convoy would stretch about 14 miles. 1,000 TRUCKS TOXIC FRACKING WASTE WATER TABLE Some open air pits are the size of six football fields. DIRECTIONS 1.DRILL Drill a hole between 3,000 and 8,000 ft. GROUND CONTAMINATION 30-70% of the fracking chemicals remain in the ground, causing unknown environmental impacts below the surface of the earth. In 2008, tap water in the City of Pittsburgh was declared unsafe to drink for several months when fracking waste contaminated the Monongahela River. 2.INJECT Inject millions of gallons of water, sand, and proprietary chemicals under high pressure into the well. 3.FRACTURE The pressure fractures the shale and props open fissures that enable natural gas to flow more freely out of the well. FOLLÓW THE MONEY PA Gov. Tom Corbett received OVER $1 MILLION in campaign contributions from gas drilling interests. A gas industry executive now oversees all environmental permitting. Gov. Corbett refuses to impose the same taxes and regulations that other states have adopted. In 2010, Former Head of Homeland Security and PA Gov. Tom Ridge became a gas industry spokesperson for $75,000/month. It is not known how far fracking fluid may travel between rocks, possibly connecting to aquifers LOCAL BENEFITS? JOBS! There are thousands of gas industry jobs in PA, but the industry does not disclose how many employed are actual PA residents. It is common to hire out-of-state workers with more drilling experience. NEW PENNSYLVANIA LANDSCAPE It is projected that by 2030, the gas industry will have cleared 34,000-85,000 acres of forests in PA to drill 60,000 new wells. Many gas companies are filing for permits to sell US-produced natural gas to countries where they can realize a larger profit. Some economists speculate that this will drive up natural gas costs in the U.S. ENERGY INDEPENDENCE! MARCELLUS SHALE FORMATION OX
