OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER WHAT IT CAN LEAD TO Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) can be devastating to those who are affected by it. ODD can lead to Conduct Disorder and even to devastating personality disorders under certain circumstances. OPPOSTITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER(ODD) Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a behavioral disorder characterized by a ongoing pattern of defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior beginning in childhood or adolescence. It is part of a group of disruptive behav- ior disorders that also includes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder. Of these three, ODD is seen as the most gentle. Children with conduct disorder act inappropriately, infringe on the rights of others, and violate the behavioral Expectations of others. One of the Most Serious Childhood Psychiatric Disorder 6%-10% Boys Have It 2% -9% of Girls Have It DIAGNOSING CONDUCT DISORDER Displays at least 3 of the following criteria in last 12 months and 3 AGGRESSION DESTRUCTION DECEITFULNESS SERIOUS TO PEOPLE OF OR VIOLATIONS AND ANIMALS PROPERTY THEFT OF RULES ODD OR CONDUCT DISORDER MIXED WITH SPECIFIC PERSONALITY TRAITS CAN LEAD TO PERSONALITY DISORDERS The effect of ODD and CD can be different for individuals based on their own personality. Most individuals will fall into three different clusters. Treatment typically includes several types of psychotherapy and training for your child. ODD is tough to deal with as a parent/guardian, and effective treatment may also include psychotherapy and training for you as well. Treatments for ODD typically include: 1) Both Individual and Family Therapy 2) Parent-Child Interaction Thereapy (PCIT) 3) Cognitive Problem Solving Training 4) Social Skills Training 5) Parent Training Always remember that along with any treatment option it's imperitive that you show consisten, unconditional love and acceptance of your child. And, don't be too hard on yourself - dealing with these issues can be difficult for even the most patient parents.
