THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP GOLFE FACTOIDS Course History Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club was founded in 1886, and became the site of the first British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship (1893). There are a total of 206 bunkers, which averages out to about 11 bunkers per hole. The course gets an ocean breeze that creates treacherous conditlons for golfers. It has been said to be a difficult, but perfect, combination of width of fairways, length of rough and pace and quality of greens. The rest are amateurs who survived the gruellng local and natlonal quallflers. OPION The lowest scoring amateur is given a silver medal, which was first awarded in 1949. All amateurs that are still competing on the final day receive a bronze medal. Records His Medal Oldest winner: Old Tom Morris (46 years, 99 days), 1867. Youngest winner: Young Tom Morris (17 years, 181 days), 1868. Most victorles: 6, Harry Vardon (1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911, 1914).
