rd worked out a plot to put out a hits compilation album with a group of executives from Virgin Records (Simon Draper, Stephen Navin and Jon Webster) and EMI’s managing director, Peter Jamieson.
The series has since become the most successful ever with over 85 million albums sold in the UK alone. The latest, ‘Now 84’, is this year’s fastest selling album so far and sales of compilation albums are on the increase as they’re cheaper than buying tracks individually. This benefit to the music fan echoes the reason why Richard founded Virgin by selling cut-price records in the first place.
