MODERN WARFARE TIMELINE Nov 10, 2009 SLEDSEHAMMER Modem Warfare 2 released. Nov 17, 2009 Sledgehammer Games founded by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, formerly of Visceral Games. CANESk March 1, 2010 Infinity Ward firings. March 2, 2010 Activision announces formation of Call of Duty business unit. Its goal is to push the brand into new "geographies, genres, and focus on high margin content." They also reveal that Sledgehammer is working on an unannounced Call of Duty action-adventure game. Infinity Ward and Modem Warfare 3's status remain unknown, but the publisher confirms they are making no less than four new Call of Duty titles: Treyarch's 2010 title (Black Ops), Sledgehammer's action-adventure game, Moden Warfare 3, and an online game focused on the Asian market -- not to mention DLC for MW2 and Black Ops produced by other Activision studios. ACTIVISION ward Jan 5, 2011 An unnamed source speaking to RAVEN thisisxbox.com claims that Modern Warfare 3 Jan 20, 2011 The LA Times reveals that both Sledgehammer and Activision's FPS standby, Raven, have been brought in to help develop Modem Warfare 3 and that the game will ship in November. will be a prequel to Call of Duty 4 and star the fan favorite character, Ghost. Feb 9, 2011 Activision describes Project Beachhead, an online multiplayer service that "will support in-game integration and bring online experiences and console play together for the first time." The announcement leads to speculation that Modern Warfare 3 will be the first game to use Beachhead and its suite of services. Feb 18, 2011 The rumors from thisisxbox.com gain credence when the UK's Official PlayStation Magazine says that "insider whispers" claim the game will be a prequel. The lead time for many magazines is six weeks. The time between This Is Xbox reporting the rumor and OPM repeating it is about six weeks. Coincidence? Either way, the rumor turned out to be bunk. Feb 25, 2011 Dog tags sent to media outlets to promote a Call of Duty fan film called Find Makarov are mistaken for the opening shots in Activision's Modem Warfare 3 marketing campaign. May 10, 2011 Sources inside Activision leak massive amounts May 11, 2011 Project Beachhead is revealed to be named Call of Duty: Elite by a leaked logo for the service. of information to Kotaku, including details about the story and various locales in the game including New York, Paris, and London. The leak also pinpoints MW3's release date as November 8. The source claims that the game will feature destructible environments, something that was previously the domain of the Battlefield series. Activision responds to the leak by kick starting its marketing campaign and revealing four teaser trailers, one for each revealed location: America, Germany, England, and France. CALL DUTY ELTE May 24, 2011 A YouTube user posts a full trailer for Modern Warfare 3 online. The trailer had been embargoed until the next moming. Activision responds by lifting the embargo and releasing the trailer themselves. May 26, 2011 Activision lifts their embargo on MW3 information given at a May 17 event. At the event the publisher showed off a level set in Manhattan. They also reveal another level called Mind the Gap, set in London. Aside from the new levels, very little gameplay information is released. May 30, 2011 The Wall Street Journal breaks the story on Call of Duty Elite. The free service adds a host of social networking features to Black Ops, with even more features waiting until the launch of Modern Warfare 3 to be unveiled. That reveal marks the last big announcement before E3. We're sure Activision will show off a large single player level at Microsoft's press conference.
