The Math Science Shortage

THE MATH SCIENCE SHUKTAGE 1ST WHY AMERICA IS FAILING TO PRODUCE ENOUGH STEM GRADUATE S STEM - the acronym for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics represents one of the quickest growing industries in the US, one of the most important to the growth of our economy, and one of the best paying career paths for graduates. However, students are increasingly opting out of STEM majors in college, and STEM careers afterwards. Why? Some experts believe that the extreme difficulty of earning a STEM degree is turning students off. We're losing an alarming proportion of our nation's science talent once the students get to college. Mitchell Chang MITCHELL J. CHANG Education Professor at UCLA STUDENTS ARE ABANDONING STEM K-12 975% SC of students talented in math and science decide not to pursue STEM in college. 0000000 000 000000C COLLEGE 19 100 000000 0000 Only 19 out of every 100 degrees earned by students are STEM degrees. Nearly 40% of students planning engineering and science majors: 40% Switch to non-STEM majors Or fail to earn any degree. POST GRADK 043% GENERIG of After graduation: 43% of STEM graduates choose not to work in the field. 046% After 10 years in a STEM field: 46% of STEM grads have left the field. THE NEED FOR STEM MAJORS IS GROWING After health care, STEM is the fastest growing sector of the economy. A++++ Increase Discussions Curtail Grade Inflation and Design Projects Math and science grades are typically the lowest on campus, with education, language and English handing out the highest. This drives students away Big lecture classes are cheap, but their dullness and rote memorization drive students away from STEM and cost America in the long run. from STEM.
