Managing Caregiver Stress 5 tips for managing caregiver stress There's no getting around it. Caregiving is stressful. And burnout can be so serious that it can cause illness and prevent you from being able to care for your loved one. Caregivers are nurturing people who are usually so busy caring for others that they neglect themselves, but remember the airplane warning: you have to secure your oxygen mask first so that you can effectively help others. Breathe deeply and relax. When we feel stressed, we tense our bodies and our breathing becomes quick and shallow. This makes us more stressed and anxious, causing us to tighten up even more, and so on. Taking slow, deep breaths will help you relax and break this cycle of tension. Divide the problem into manageable pieces. If your responsibilities feel overwhelming, it can help to break them down into smaller chunks. Dealing with the pieces individually won't seem so difficult. Make a list, either mentally or written, of the issues and tasks and think about them one at a time. Be physically active. Regular exercise is a great way to keep your stress level low. Exercise is also good for your heart, digestion and respiratory system. Keep your sense of humor. o see the lighter side.
