The Layers Of Maggie Daley Park

HOW MAGGIE DALEY PARK IS BEING TRANSFORMED After two years of construction, Maggie Daley Park is scheduled to open to the public in Fall 2014. But when you walk on the Chicago Lakeshore's newest public park, do you know what steps went into the developments under your feet? The northern part of the park is scheduled to open this fall, including the ice skating ribbon and climbing wall. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2015, at a total cost of $60 million. 209,000 cubic yards of soil and 800 trees are moved temporarily to Peanut Park. The layer of topsoil is returned from Peanut Park and added over the geofoam. In addition to the original 800 trees, 700 more trees will be planted in Maggie Daley Park. 4 Polystyrene geofoam is used to create hills and landscapes. Geofoam is around 100 times ligher than soil, so it doesn't add excessive weight to the parking structure below. Under the park, the 1,470,000 square foot East Monroe Street Garage is renovated and waterproofed. This details the construction processes of the new downtown Chicago park. It is interesting how engineering feats are accomplished.
