Kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in both men and women Did You Know? There are approximately 65,000 new cases of kidney cancer diagnosed in the United States each year Of these new cases, about 40,000 are men and 25,000 are women The median age of diagnosis is 64 years, and it is very uncommon in people younger than age 45 There are approximately 13,000 kidney cancer related deaths in the United States each year Risk Factors for Kidney Cancer The exact cause of kidney cancer is unknown; however, there are several risk factors that increase your chance of developing the disease. These risk factors are: • Smoking • Obesity Exposure to certain chemicals (e.g., asbestos, cadmium, herbicides, benzene) • Family history of kidney cancer High blood pressure (hypertension) • Male gender Kidney Cancer Symptoms Someone with kidney cancer in the early stages may not have any signs of the disease. It is important to consult your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms: • Blood in your urine • A persistent pain in your side • A lump in your side or belly • Fever • Severe fatigue • Unexplained weight loss • Anemia Kidney Cancer Treatment Options Doctors work closely with patients to customize the appropriate treatment plans, based on each individual's disease stage and other health factors. Treatment plans can include one of these options or a combination: Surgical Procedures Kidney cancer is primarily treated by surgery for both early and late stage disease. Full or partial nephrectomies can be performed either with traditional, open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, including robotic surgery. With robotic surgery, patients may benefit from fewer complications and side effects, including smaller incisions, less scarring and post-surgical pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery, compared to traditional, open The DaVinci robot surgery. Nonsurgical Treatments Tumor Minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatments for kidney cancer include ablative techniques, such as • cryotherapy • microwave ablation • radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Percutaneous cryoablation Percutaneous cryoablation freezes the tumor. Microwave ablation and RFA kill tumors with heat while sparing healthy tissue surrounding the tumor. • Active Surveillance (wait to treat) • Radiation Therapy • Chemotherapy Kidney Cancer Research Research on kidney cancer focuses on discovering new treatments and ways of combining and sequencing current ones. Goals of current research include genetic analyses, highly targeted treatment, evaluating new drugs for metastatic cancer (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body), and personalizing these drugs so they can work with an individual's immune system to destroy his or her own cancer cells.
