Keeping It Real

KEEPING IT REAL What are the top reasons for choosing a real life, lo-fi, analogue, hardcopy book over the digital option? In a recent poll we asked 1,000 Fatbrainers just that. Here's what they told us. %3D FEELING 65% in page 56. There's no app for that. Sheer physicality, the weight, notes and inscriptions, dog-eared memories, creasing, the old ticket tucked LEARNING 61% So who studies without Post-Its, highlighters and three volumes open at once? SHARING 58% You can't lend an eBook to friends and loved ones. And you can't readcycle it. SEEING 53% Cool designs, end papers, illustrations, gilt edges. Books are objet d'art. RE-SELLING 45% Hardcopy is yours. You've paid for it. You can sell it or swap it as you see fit. COLLECTING 44% Old, first edition, beautifully designed or just having that lovely row of books on a shelf. GIVING 44% Try popping a ribbon on a download. A little bit impersonal. SHOPPING 42% Clicking and swiping alone at home. Or delving and caressing amongst the shelves of a bookshop? POSING 9% SMELLING 11% How can anyone know how clever you are if all they see in your mitts is a grey rectangle? Books smell nice. eBooks don't. Simple. •)•
