JACK THE RIPPER THE CRIMES THAT SHOOK HISTORY The Year is 1888 April Зrd Local Prostitute Emma Smith is attacked and murdered by a local gang. Although unrelated to Jack the Ripper, her name was the first on the Whitechapel Murders File, which later went on to include Jack the Ripper's murders. August 7th The body of prostitute Martha Turner is found at 5am on the first floor landing of George Yard Buildings. Debate still rages today over whether she was in fact the first victim of Jack the Ripper August 31st At 3:40am, the body of Mary Anne Nichols is discovered in Bucks Row, Whitechapel. She is believed to be the first confirmed victim of the September now infamous JACK THE RIPPER 8th Annie Chapman, the second victim of Jack the Ripper, is found in the backyard of 29 Hanbury Street September 10th The 'Mile End Vigilance Committee is set up to assist police in their efforts to catch the murderer. Elsewhere, Leather Apron, who police believe to be a man called John Pizer, is also arrested however provides alibis for the two September 27th recent murders and is released. A letter addressed 'DEAR BOSS' arrives at the Central News Agency. The letter is signed JACK THE RIPPER which gives the unknown murderer an identity still recognisable today. September 30th 2 murders are committed in just one hour. The body of Elizabeth Stride is found at lam in Berner Street before later, at 1:45am, Catherine Eddowes is discovered in Mitre Square in the City of London. The location of the second murder now means City Police also join the hunt for Jack the Ripper. October 1st In the wake of the two murders, the police make public the letter recently received from Jack the Ripper October 6th October A second letter, again signed by Jack the Ripper, is received at the Central News Agency. On this occasion, the police request that this is not made public. 16th Mr George Lusk, a founder member of the 'Mile End Vigilance Committee receives a letter addressed 'FROM HELL' which contains half a kidney. Speculation in the press suggests this belonged to Ripper victim Catherine Eddowes. November 9th Mary Kelly, 25, is found dead in Dorset Street, Spitfields. She is believed by most to be the last victim of Jack the Ripper.
