Interior Design Throughout The Years

INTERIOR DESIGN THROUGHOUT THE AGES Ever since the first houses, people have found ways to fill them. From the Classic Era to the Contemporary Era, home decor has been filled with clashing trends: function vs form, boldness vs subtlety, extravagance vs minimalism. Take a look and decide if you agree with some of the most popular trends in history. 3150 BC ANCIENT EGYPT Some of the first interior design was seen in Ancient Egyptian mortar and mud huts that were being decorated with simple furniture and animal skins/textiles, vases, scriptures, murals. *POPULAR COLORS: 753 BC-476 AD CLASSICAL ANCIENT ROME Roman design, borrowed heavily from the Greeks, had a great concern for proportion and harmony with the constructing of buildings. This design was typified by flat roofs resting on high columns. *POPULAR COLORS: 1300-1700 CLASSICAL THE RENAISSANCE The Renaissance emphasized symmetry and orderly planning in the small details of arches, pilasters, and moldings. Wall paintings depicting mythical subjects and simple floral patterns were common. POPULAR COLORS: 1837-1901 CLASSICAL THE VICTORIAN ERA The Industrial Revolution made it easy to create decorative ornamentation, leading to a great abundance of it in design. Pointed arches used to generate interiors departed from any historic antecedents. POPULAR COLORS: 1880 - 1960 TRADITIONAL THE COLONIAL REVIVAL Colonial Revival focused on symmetry with classical influence like columns, pilasters, and elaborate entryways. Interiors have a Georgian influence and detail with fine wood panelling and ornamental ceilings. POPULAR COLORS: 1970-1980 TRADITIONAL THE SEVENTIES The 70s were the time of conflict: earth tones and campy colors, nature-loving hippiedom and high-tech futurism. This decade is remembered for its colors, wood panelling, and radical experimentation. POPULAR COLORS: 1980-1990 MODERN THE EIGHTIES With the 80s came sublety. This decade was known for its calming pastels, usage of brass furniture, and open kitchens. "China" patterns and preppy-styles were also not uncommon. POPULAR COLORS: 1990-2000 MODERN THE NINETIES 1990 began an era of minimalism where beige and white ruled the early decade. Slowly, patterns began the popular aesthetic and floral and damask became very popular. POPULAR COLORS: 2000-PRESENT CONTEMPORARY TODAY The 21st century is emerging as a soft modern/contemporary look: soothing colors, bold accent pieces, open layouts, mixing and matching a warm, comfortable environment with modern finishes. POPULAR COLORS: CONTEMPORARY *As suggested by archaeological data and research. II THE CLASSICAL ERA Before 1300 BC The Classical Era refers to the time period before interior design was popular. Homes decorations during this era were heavily influenced by the materials of the area and religious practices. THE TRADITIONAL ERA 1300 BC-1901 AD This aesthetic focuses on antique furnishings, rich colors and symmetrical room layouts. It has a formal feeling and typically embodies a certain period in history, particularly based on 18th-19th century European and American designs. THE MODERN ERA 1880-1980 The Modern Movement was a shift toward a more current aesthetic design. Inspired by a new machine aesthetic and belief that form follows function - it stripped away unnecessary ornament from the interior. THE CONTEMPORARY ERA 1980-Present Contemporary design relies on clean, smooth lines resulting in an uncluttered look marked by minimal ornamentation. Neutral colors, stainless steel and wood furniture are commonly used, N.
