How Did We Get the Bible?

How Did We Get the Bible? The History Book on Bible Translation There is no specific place or day or time for the inception of what we know as the Bible. Instead, the Bible was written by 40 differ- ent authors over a span of 1,500 years as God revealed his mes- sage to humankind and appointed different people to record that message. The 66 books that comprise the collected and written Word of God came to us by God's initiative, guidance and grace. Early Translations/ Translators Date Description The Hebrew Bible, the Tanakh, was translated into Greek by approximately 70 Jewish scholars 250 BC Septuagint The Septuagint was translated into Latin and was the first Bible to include all 66 books; this became known as the Vulgate The Original Bible Manuscripts ca. How Do We Know the Writings Are Authentic? Modern Bible Translations Passages within the Bible itself refer to other writings in the Bible, authenticating the truth and unity of the message Accuracy in copies of Old Testament writings is proven when comparing the words to earlier manuscripts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls We can choose from many Bible translations that help modern readers understand God's Word even though it was written in another culture, thousands of years ago. Some versions prioritize the form or structure of the language-bringing it close to what the original writers wrote. Other versions prioritize the meaning-bringing it close to what the original writers meant. And finally, some versions, including the New International Version (NIV), prioritize both-bringing the reader as close as they can get to the experience of the original audience by allowing them to perceive the form of the original and the meaning of the original at the same time. Jesus confirmed the authority of the Old Testament as God's Word Writings by first- and second- century philosophers and church fathers refer to Bible writings as God's Word (for example, Philo, Josephus, Clement and Polycarp) Matt. 5:18–19; 15:3–6; Luke 24:27; 2 Pet. 1:19
