HOW AMERICANS AREN'T SPENDING THEIR TIME In 2009 Americans spent 9.1% less time working than they did in 2007. This is no doubt in large part due to the unemployment rate doubling from 5% 10% during that period. So what are Americans doing with the extra minutes? Not much. Surpisingly, even with 8.4 million jobs lost from 2007 to 2009, unemployed individuals ages 18 and older actually spent 37% less time dedicated to educational activites than the national average. (20 minutes per day compared to the 28 minute average in 2009.)
