In early days Mesoamericans made items with natural rubber. In Europe, horn and Tortoiseshell were used in early plastic. 1839 was the year when Charles Goodyear in- vented the process of "vulcanization. FROM CELLULOID TO SYNTHETIC PLASTIC In 1856, Alexander Parkes invented an early cellu- loid. He called is "Parkesine". 1870 was the year when the process of making cel- luloid was further developed . After two years, Hyatt and his brother went on to patent first plastics injection moulding machine. 1909 was the year when Bakelite and an early syn- thetic plastic was introduced. FROM POLYVINYL CHLORIDE TO PET In 1926, BF Goodrich scientists perfected Polyvinyl Chloride(PVC). 1933 was the year when process of making poly- ethylene was discovered by researchers at ICI. ICI In 1941, Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) was first produced. During world war II, the production of plastic was on high demand. FROM POLYETHYLENE BAGS TO MODERN PLASTIC In 1950's, First plastic bags were used. 1954 Giulio Natta discovered polypropylene. In the same year, extended polystyrene was in- vented by Dow Chemical . From 1960's to late 70's plastics were further tough- ened and made compatible to use with metals. O Plastic In UK, demand for plastic materials stood at 3.7 million tonnes in 2012, of which packaging took a 44.3%, building and construction 19.2% and auto- motive 5.9% In UK, 2.5m tonnes of plastic materials are produced annually. 35% of manufactured plastic products are exported. 7,500 companies are active in the sector. Plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose. The use of plastic in Western Europe is growing at a rate of 4% each year.
