MICKSIGARAGE.COM THE CAR PARTS EXPERTS History of the Honda Civic Mk 1 HONDA 1972-1979 • In the early 70's Honda considered pulling out of car manufacturing altogether after a string of poorly performing models. The Civic turned that around and was a huge success Weight: 680kg • Introduced in 1972 as a 2 door, the Civic featured a 1.2 litre 4 cyl engine, power assisted brakes, optional air con, reclining vinyl seats and wood-effect dash 1327 mm v0osdas • The Civic was also produced in a 3 & 5 door hatch, a coupe and an eståte • The engine could be run on either leaded or unleaded fuel 3551 mm Mk 2 Weight: 720kg 1979 - 1983 • The 2nd generation Civic was larger and featured a more angular design • The re-designed engine featured a 3rd valve per cylinder designed to improve economy and performance 00S 1350 mm • The top of the range engine was a 1500cc unit producing 67bhp • Three transmissions were offered. A 4 & 5 speed manual and a 2 speed auto known as "Hondamatic" 3870 mm Mk 3 Weight: 760kg 1983 - 1987 • The Civic range diversified even further with the introduction oř the mk3. The 5 door hatch and estate models were merged and the Civic Shuttle released. A lightweight 2 door coupe called the CRX was also introduced 28A- 1346 mm • The popular D series engine was introduced as well as a 1600cc DOHC engine with fuel injection on the Si sport models 3810 mm • A push button operated 4 wheel drive system was also available Mk 4 Weight: 876kg 1988 - 1991 • The mk 4 Civic again increased in size but its bonnet & roof line was significantly lower than its predecessor which gave it a very sleek profile 1331 mm • Fully independant rear suspension was introduced • SİR Sports model introduced with the legendary VTEC B16A twin cam engine which had 160bhp 3965 mm • Conventional engines were producing 70-80bhp per litre, the B16A vtec produced 100bhp per litre. Most supercars of the era produced significantly less! Mk 5 Weight: 925kg 1991 - 1995 • The latest generation Civic adopted a much more aero- dynamic, wedge shaped design • Drivers airbags were standard across the range and certain models were fitted with ABS brakes 122 1288 mm • Del Sol model (2 door coupe notch back) introduced to replace the CRX 021 • Range topping SiR-II, and SiR-S models were only available in Japan but were imported in large numbers & remain hugely popular with tuners, racerš & rally teams due to the light weight and powerful engines and vast array of aftermarket performance parts available 4069 mm Mk 6 Weight: 1143kg 1996 - 2000 Introduction of the Type R! гаР • The High performance type R featured a 182bhp B16B 1600cc VTEC engine, limited slip diff, close ratio gearbox, miņimal sound deadening and a partially seam welded shell 1389mm • A gearless continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that promised séamless performance and manual-transmission fuel economy was introduced 4178mm • All base models now came with 1.6 litre engines Mk 7 Weight: 1245kg 2001 - 2005 The 7th generation Civic featured re-designed frọnt suspnesion, now using a cheaper but moře comfortable McPherson strut set up as opposed to the sharper double wishbone setup of the mk6 1491 mm • The mk 7 featured a much stiffer chassis despite having a flat floor in the rear which made centre seat passengers much more comfortable • Some models featured a rally-inspired dashboard mounted gearlever 4277mm • First Hybrid Civic introduced in 2003 which had a 13hp electric motor & a conventional petrol engine Type R now had 200bhp and was awarded Hot Hatch of the year by Top Gear, What Car & 5th Gear Mk 8 Weight: 1157kg 2006 - 2011 • New groundbreaking interior & exterior design Space-age digital dashboard display instead of conventional dials and high quality materials gave the interior a futuristic feel 1460 mm • The european version of the mk8 features a different body style (hatchback instead of saloon) and torsion beam réar suspension whereas the US' & Japanese markets got the saloon body as standard and independant rear suspensión 4249mm • Type R version hailed by many as a disapointment as it featured the same 200bhp enģine as the outgoing model but a poorer suspension setup in the torsion beam rear axle Mk 9 Weight: 1156kg 2011 - Present Despite obvious visual similarities to the mk8, every panel on the mk9 is different 1470 mm The mk9 was developed during the height of the global financial crisis & Honda believěd that consumers would forego space & quality in new vehicles so long as they were fuel efficient and affordable. Motorsport inspired underfloor aerodynamic developments led to a 3.4% reduction in drag coefficient 4300mm The current Civic in Tourer (estate) form competes, Chámpionship. It's the first estate car to be entered by a factóry team since the Volvo 850 in 1994 HONDA
