HISTORY OF AUTISM AUTISM AND THE DSM 1980 Autism makes its first appearance in the DSM, the DSM II, as a separate diagnostic category called 'Infantile Autism'. 1987 Infantile autism changed to autistic disorder. 1994 DSM-IV: Pervasive Developmental Disorders added and now the DSM includes five distinct conditions: Autistic Disorder,Asperger's Disorder, Rett's Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, PDD-NOS. 2013 DSM-V: A single diagnosis is now used, simply called autism spectrum disorder (ASD). CDC AUTISM AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MONITORING (ADDM) NETWORK PREVALENCE DATA 2000 1 in 150 children 2004 1 in 125 children 2006 1 in 110 children 2008 1 in 88 children 2013 1 in 50 children DID YOU KNOW? 1 in 54 Boys ASDS are almost 5 times more common among boys than girls TTTTT 1 in 252 Girls 1111111 Children born to older parents are at a higher risk for ASDS Parents who have a child with an ASD have a 2%-18% chance of having a second child who is also affected Intensive behavioral interventions for children with ASDS cost $40,000 to $60,000 per child per year More children are being diagnosed at earlier ages a growing number (18%) of them by age 3.
