History of ATV The all-terrain vehicle (ATV), also known as three and four-wheelers, was initially developed in Japan as a farm-to-town vehicle in isolated, mountainous areas. During spring thaws and rainy seasons steep mountainous roads were often impassable with conventional vehicles. The three-wheeled ATV proved to be a much better mode of travel and soon became a recreational vehicle, providing transportation to areas inaccessible by other motorized transport. And it didn't take much before Japanese manufacturers realized that the ATV could be sold to Americans. 1963 In 1963 marketers targeted the general public with good, clean two-wheeled fun, and Introduced millions to motorcyding. It had an odometer, five forward speeds, plus reverse. Honda begins to sell the first ATV designed specifcally for utility use, the ATC 200E 'Blg Red' three-wheeler. 1984 1984 Yamaha and Honda begin selling four-wheeled ATVS. 1987 Polaris offers Improved brakes 1987 and automatic four-wheel drive, replading manual four-wheel drive. 1993 Kawasakl offers the first 400cc 1993 éngine. 1998 The first Arctic Cat ATVS go on I 1998. sale. 2000 2000 Honda Introduces a s00cc engine and continuously varla- ble transmisslon. 2001 Polaris offers a 683cc engine, the 2001 largest ever so far in an ATV, on Its Sportsman model. It was sold for US$7,399. 2006 2006 Bombardier Introduces the fuel- Injected 800cc Outlander, a V-twin-powered machine that features class-leading horse- power and torque 2009 The Immensely popular FourTrax 2009 Rancher lineup grows with the debut of a new Honda automatic transmission that provides ive- speed auto-shifting or push-but- ton manual gear selection. 2012 An all-new liquid-cooled 475cc single-cylinder OHV four-stroke engine with a hlgher compres- slon ratlo plus a new fuel-Injec- 2012 tion system brings admirable sophistication to the quartet of 2012 models of the FourTrax Foreman 4x4.
