Sotheby's auction house Sotheby's, one of the world's largest and oldest auction houses, holds 250 auctions every year, working with over 70 categories of works of art In 1744, London bookseller Samuel Baker held the first-ever sale and opened a permanent auction hall in 1754. His nephew and heir, John Sotheby, was the eponym of the auction house. Sotheby's has been entrusted with the sale of many world treasures, like Napoleon's library on St. Helena, the Duchess of Windsor's jewelry, the estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and the paintings of Rembrandt, Rubens, Picasso and others. Sotheby's has 90 offices in 40 countries.
