The Gun Control We Already Agree On

THE GUN CONTROL WE ALREADY J AGREE There is much to be discussed in the aftermath of a horrible tragedy. But surprisingly, four out of five Americans agree on one issue: common sense gun laws. The media portrays us as a nation divided. CNN and ABC have cited polls that say 50% of voters favor none or minor gun restrictions. With 48% support major restrictions. But all this shows a resistance to the concept of restrictions. when it comes to reforms that are actually being considered, we mostly agree. Common sense gun laws aim to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, not everyone. Frank Luntz, a Republican strategist and Fox News analyst, conducted a poll of nearly 1,000 gun owners. Q: Do you support requiring a criminal background • check for anyone purchasing a gun? No (16%) No opinion (2%) Even NRA members overwhelmingly support background checks, with 74%. Yes (82%)- Q: Do you support a proposal prohibiting people on terror watch lists from purchasing guns? No (16%) No opinion (8%) Support from NRA members is 72%. Yes (76%) Q: Should concealed carry permits only be granted to applicants who do not have prior arrests for domestic violence? No (18%) Support from NRA members is 71%. No opinion (9%)- Yes (73%) Support for common sense gun laws is even higher among those who don't own guns. When we're standing on common ground - alongside NRA members - why has nothing been done? Congress has consistently voted against common sense gun laws. The most recent bill to reform gun laws failed on a vote of 263 to 161. This is because Congress is afraid of the NRA and their perceived power at election time. But this power is a myth. The NRA spent more than $100,000 in only seven elections this year. It lost six of those. Our Congress should fear the voters, not the gun lobby. It's time to take the conversation back from the media and lobbyists. We have come together as a nation in the wake of a senseless tragedy, and found we have more in common than we thought. In fact, we are the majority. It's time to act and let Congress and the White House know that we will NOŤ be a society that accepts these massacres as the way of life. We have had enough.
