GHOSTS OF GONE BIRDS AROUND THE WORLD EUROPE has two bird extinetions to its name not including the many from its overseas territories. One species, Slender-billed Curlew is listed as Critically Endangered but, hasn't been seen for several years THE BONIN ISLANDS. JAPAN, have seen three extinctions a grosbeak wood-pigeon and thrush. They resulted from elearance of the islanda' subtropical evergreen forest, and from predation by introduced cats and rats HAWAII is a hotspot of bird extinction with at least 21 species lost in recent times AFRICA'S OFFSHORE islands have amassed at least 40 extinetions Fifteen species have been lost from NEW ZEALAND and its islands mainly as a result of introduced rats Five species of macaw have become extinct in THE CARIBBEAN as well l as three other parrot species MAINLAND SOUTH AMERICA has had anly one known extinction. Colombian Grebe. Several other species remain lost and may or may not still survive No known bird extinctions have occurred on MAINLAND AFRICA, although there are a couple of species currently vying for this dubious honour mainly caused by unsustainable forestry and agriculture The most famous of extinct birds, the Dodo, was in fact a large pigeon that had become flightless on its island haven.
