First Responders

O FIRST RESPONDERS • MAKING A DIFFERENCE EVERY DAY First Responders and EMTS are out there saving lives every day. To do so, they need to be compassionate, knowledgeable and well-trained. Programs in criminal justice and first response can give them the tools they'll need to make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others. WHAT IS A FIRST RESPONDER? A First Responder is someone who is professionally trained to respond to an emergency. After 911 is called, a First Responder is usually the first person to arrive on the scene and provide assistance and basic life support. WHAT KIND OF SKILLS DO I NEED TO BE A FIRST RESPONDER? COMPASSION LEADERSHIP CONFIDENCE QUICK REFLEXES CRITICAL THINKING ATTENTION TO DETAIL. GOOD COMMUNICATION WHAT MIGHT I DO? A First Responder has a range of responsibilities, depending on the situation and needs of the people involved. HERE ARE SOME OF THE IMPORTANT TASKS YOU MIGHT NEED TO PERFORM AS A FIRST RESPONDER: Evaluate the situation and determine appropriate action Stabilize the scene and evaluate injury and condition of victims Determine priority of patient treatment based on condition Perform CPR (to revive normal heartbeat and breathing) Provide basic first aid like bandaging wounds, controlling excessive bleeding, or performing the Heimlich maneuver (to clear a patient's airway when choking) Assist other responders at the scene including police officers, firefighters, EMTS, paramedics, or crime scene investigators Assist patients experiencing trauma Preserve evidence WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
