The U.S. birth rate grew every 血 year from 2003 to 2007 and has been declining since. Every 4.5 minutes, a baby is born with a birth defect. Birth defects affect 1 in 33 babies every year and cause 1 in 5 infant deaths. Tests like an ultrasound and amniocente- sis can detect birth defects such as heart defects or down syndrome before a baby is born. The U.S. ranks 29th in the world for its infant mortality rate, the number of babies who die in their first year per 1,000 live babies, meaning the U.S. loses more babies than 28 other nations per year, 1 in 5 births in the USA are induced. 44% of women surveyed in 2002 reported their doctor wanted to induce. Only 16% reported medically- indicated reasons. The preterm birth rate declined in the United States for the third straight year to 12.18 % of births in 2009. Between 1981 and 2006, the percentage of infants born preterm (less than 37 completed weeks) rose by more than one-third. The average U.S. newborn weight in 2008 was 7 pounds, 4.26 ounces. About 8 percent of babies born in 2009 were at "low birth weight" (defined as less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces, or 2,500 grams). Percentage who were working six months after they gave birth was 55 percent. 30% of births were by cesarean delivery in the United States. 99% of moms in the USA gave birth in hos- pitals. Home births are more common among women aged 35 and over, and among women with several previous children. Midwives attended 61 percent of home births.
