The Evolution of Smoking Cigarettes are the single-most traded item on the planet, with approximately 1 trillion being sold from country to country each year. At a global take of more than $400 billion, it's one of the world's largest industries. Electric cigarettes are the latest example of the evolutionary chain. What was once crude, smelly, and offensive on the brink of extinction has now evolved into something much more sophisticated. From Tobacco Leaf to Electronic Cigarette: 5000 B.C. 1492 The inhabitants of South America discovered, cultivated and chewed tobacco leafs. When the new world was discovered, so was tobacco. 1500s 1600s Sailors bring the plant back to Europe. Tobacco is planted, smoked and enjoyed all over the continent! As the popularity of tobacco use grew, laws and regulations regarding its growth, use and sale are passed. Mid 1600s By the mid 1600s, tobacco was commonplace in Europe. Taxes cause tobacco prices to skyrocket. The popularity of electronic cigarettes begins to rise in the United States. Today As tobacco cigarette bans continue, smokers continue to turn to E-Cigarettes as the next step in the evolution of smoking
