The Eyolution of Flight Attendant Uniforms From prim and proper to all-out sexy to subtly sophisticated 1920S Uniforms were designed more for a male figure then a women's In the '20s when Swiss Air hired the first female "stewardess". -1930'S Ellen Church First American flight attendant. Attire consisted of a boxy coat, high-collared dress shirt and long high-wasted skirt. 1940'S - Skirt Suits designed to be more streamlined and fitted, playing up femininity. It was the era for flight attendants to be Icons of glamour and femininity. Women were expected to be charming, attractive and competent. 02c 1950'S Slightly Militant. Silhouetted jacket and Pencil Skirt.Applicants were required to be young, white, attractive and unmarried. 1960'S Flight attendants lose the jacket. New look subtle sexy features: tailored, pencil skirts with matching V-neck blouses. 60's was the declared of the Jumbo Jets and more stylish attire for flight attendants. All strict rules surrounding gender, age, weight and marital status were being questioned due to the Civil Right Act. Fashion designers moonlighted as uniform designers, adding style and cachet to the profession. 1970'S Micro-shorts, low-slung belts, slinky scarves and go-go boots Era where they capitalized on sex appeal of stewardesses. But it didn't last long. Toward the end of the '70s flight attendants started taking advantage of the new laws prohibiting sex discrimination. Not surprisingly, they were one of the first groups of professional women to raise the issue of sexual harassment. 1980'S & 1990'S Return to the Prim and proper uniform of the 50's & 60's Skirt Suit or Pant Suit.
