Dont' Judge Me By My Color!
DON'T JUDGE ME BY MY COLOR! Why Black Pets Don't Get Adopted Black animals often wait longest in shelters to be adopted and are the first to be killed. It's a real phenomenon. Shelters report that black animals go unnoticed in shelters, languish waiting to be adopted, and are more often killed. It's called Black Dog Syndrome, and it also applies to cats and other pets. The only difference between these loving animals and their multi-colored little buddies is the color of their coats. WHY IS THIS THE CASE? No one knows for sure. It could be any number of reasons: Bad Press: Misunderstanding: Perceptions: BAD NEWS Many people associate dark colors on animals with being less "light-hearted" or friendly, but that's just silly. Animals of any color can be sweet-tempered. Studies show that many Hollywood and the media often portray black dogs and cats as a villain, people think of black animals as being more aloof, but nobody knows why. And it certainly isn't true. unlucky or evil. Harder to see: Harder to notice: Harder to advertise: Our eyes are drawn to color, pattern and contrast. We simply may not be as likely to see a darker colored animal, especially in a corner of a shelter cage. It's harder to photograph a dark colored pup or kitten. A photographer needs to be skilled at using the light, because the eyes are the same color as the fur. Many animals are now found online, so a good headshot could help in finding them a home. People tend to make an emotional connection with facial expressions, and on an all-black animal, the little guy's 'personality' can be harder to discern. WHAT CAN WE DO?
