In the U.S., nearly 50 percent of prison inmates are addicted to drugs or alcohol. 24 00000 00000 Data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics shows that approximately 18 percent of all inmates committed their crime to get money to purchase drugs. Many illegal drugs come from Mexico, where drug cartels make over $50 billion each year from their business. It is estimated that nearly 90 percent of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamines enter the U.S. via Mexican drug cartels. In 2007, approximately 25 percent of all homicides in Mexico were related to drug trafficking.
