DENTAL CARE during PREGNANCY DentalOn Park.com.au BEFORE You Get Pregnant VISIT THE DENTIST If you plan to start a family, have a thorough dental examination, professional clean and radio graphs before becoming pregnant. Complete all recommended treatment so that your mouth is in great health. DURING Pregnancy Tell your dentist [and doctor) if you are pregnant. Avoid dental X-rays during pregnancy. Don't skip your dental checkup appointment simply because you are pregnant. PREGNANCY GINGIVITIS Take regular periodontal (gum] exams because pregnancy causes hormonal changes that put you at increased risk for periodontal disease and for tender gums that bleed easily 1st TRIMESTER COPING WITH MORNING SICKNESS Follow good oral hygiene practices to prevent and/or reduce oral health problems. USE BLAND TOOTHPASTE to avoid morning sickness. RINSE YOUR MOUTH out frequently if suffering from morning sickness. USE A SOFT TOOTHBRUSH with a small toothbrush to prevent vomiting. Dont brush right after vomiting. AVOID SUGARY SNACKS even though you may be craving them. HELP BUILD HEALTHY TEETH Maintain a diet rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, and Calcium. MOST DENTISTS DISCOURAGE BLEACHING during pregnancy although there is no evidence to suggest it may harm your baby. 2nd TRIMESTER AVOID DENTAL TREATMENTS during last 6 weeks of pregnancy. BRUSHING AND FLOSSING Remain especially thorough in your home care. SCHEDULE A DENTAL APPOINTMENT 3rd after the baby is born. TRIMESTER AFTER You've Had Your Baby SEE DENTIST SOON AFTER DELIVERY to have mouth examined AMALGAM REMOVAL (SILVER FILLINGS) Talk to your dentist about removing silver fillings because mercury can travel through breastmilk in high concentrations.
