PEDESTRIANS CYCLISTS STATES WITH THE MOST ACCIDENTS 25,307 TOTAL NO. OF FATAL TRUCK INVOLVEMENTS OVER THE PERIOD 2004 TO 2008 No. of Involvements 299 to 483 135 to 198 89 to 127 TEXAS had the greatest number of CALIFORNIA truck involvements over 41 to 84 number of truck 1,201 13 to 35 involvements in GEORGIA 1 to 7 FLORIDA the period 2004 to 2008 over the period 2004 to 2008 DRIVERS AND DRIVING CONDITIONS 84.7% of fatal truck accidents occur in “normal" weather conditions. 639 62.1% truck drivers were fatally injured in a traffic accident. of truck drivers had no driver factors recorded. Failure to stay in lane was the most common driver factor to contribute to fatal accidents. 18.8% were on a trip over 500 miles 22.6% were on a local trip (within 50 miles of base) 2/3 FEBRUARY of fatal accidents occur in rural areas and in daylight. had the greatest number of fatal involvements with 402 while March had the fewest with 297. TYPES OF TRAILERS IN FATAL ACCIDENTS of configurations consisted of a 0970 three-axle tractor pulling a two-axle trailer. of doubles (two trailers) consisted of a two-axle tractor with a one-axle first 49.3% trailer and a two-axle second trailer. LEADING CAUSES OF TRUCK ACCIDENTS of truck drivers involved in a fatal traffic accident had been drinking. 3.1% 1.2% of truck drivers involved in a fatal traffic accident 10.9% had been using drugs. Failure to stay in lane 4.8% Driving too fast Inattentive 6.1% 4.0% Failure to yield 0.3% 1.6% Cellular phone in use of truck drivers involved in a fatal accident were recorded as drowsy or asleep.
