What would AMERICA be without CHICAGO? WHILE CHICAGO is well known for its unfortunate tragedies, the city also has a tradition of historical events and cultural milestones. TRAGEDY SUCCESS The Second City's first show December 16, 1959 The Great Chicago Fire of 1871. A great and destructive fire that started in a barn on Sunday, October and torched the city until early Tuesday. October 1O, killed hundreds of people. The now famous comedy troupe made its debut in Chicago and calls it home to this day. Second City has spawned the careers of many successful comedians. December 30, 1903 The Iroquois Theater fire December 3, 1943 Pizzeria Uno opens (and Chicago-style pizza begins) More than 600 people died in this tragic fire, leading to the implementation of safety standards for theaters and public buildings to avoid such future catastrophes. This is the restaurant that originated the Chicago tradition of "deep dish" pizza, a unique take on an Italian-American classic.
