These stats are based on results of recent surveys conducted by Essential Travel. The surveys were aimed at those who had been on a gap year and those planning a trip. Where do backpackers really go? Travelling with friends or siblings Travelling alone Travelling with a partner 49% 52% 28% 11% 23% 37% Why are backpackers going? 01 O Uni fees Regardless of an increase in University fees, less school leavers are going on a gap year, 41% had previously been with only 19% currently planning a gap year trip. 02 Job prospects Internships, volunteering and improving one's CV have become more important for those going on a gap year with 62% stating it as a reason compared to 42% in the past. There has however been an increase in those taking a sabbatical from 6% to 18%. 03 Bad economy 48% of those leaving university said the economic situation had affected them. 61% of parents claimed the following reasons For their children going on a gар year Those going on a gap year gave their Improve CV reasons 85% said adventure Work Experience Volunteer 73% said fun Learn a language Travel Insurance wow facts! 80% of people who bought travel insurance, did not purchase it with their ticket leaving them financially uncovered for the most expeňsive part of the trip 10% of those who bought travel insurance last minute, člaimed when they returned! 23% of people who did not take out travel insurance partook in wintersports! "I support the idea of a gap year - life is for the living." 31% of those who didn't buy travel insurance went for 9 months or longer!
